We see a lot of new parents in the office and the biggest complaint we get is "our backs".  Through pregnancy we know the shift in momma's centre of gravity and pregnant belly are reasons for some back pain.  But why the pain with a newborn?

Lifting a newborn (7-10lbs) around 40-50 times a day is a lot of pressure on your body.  At around a year, your baby weighs around 20 lbs and at two years of age you can have a child who weighs 25-30lbs.  Repetitive living of your child can put your back at risk.

Lifting

  • Stand with your feet at least a shoulder width apart.
  • Keep your back in neutral position, avoiding any excessive forward tilt of the hips, and bend your knees.
  • Bring your baby as close to your chest as possible, and then lift using both arms.

Carrying

  • When carrying your child use your feet and your back.  Remember to pivot your feet rather than twisting with your back.
  • This will ensure that you’re turning with your hips, which will reduce your risk of back pain.

Holding

  • Hold your child in an upright position, directly against your chest.
  • Carrying a child on one hip creates postural imbalances that can lead to low back pain over time.
  • Be mindful of what side you carry your child.  Try to alternate sides as this decreases the pressure that is placed on your hips while holding your child.

Feeding

  • Always sit in a chair with back support and avoid leaning forward to reach your newborn’s mouth.
  • Instead, use pillows or blankets to support and position your baby closer to you.
