Can chiropractic, which corrects the spine, really affect the pain occurring from TMJ? Read on to learn more.
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the skull to the jaw, more specifically the temporal bone of the skull to the mandible. We have two of these joints, one on each side of the face. This joint provides all the motion for the jaw in relation to the skull - upward and downward movement, and inward and outward movement.
The TMJ is subject to inflammatory disorders, including degenerative arthritis which can lead to painful movements of the jaw, head and ear pain and tenderness of the muscles surrounding the jaw.
TMJ syndrome may involve radiation pain, especially to the jaw line and ear, aching facial pain, pain around the ear and potential locking of the jaw. This is a problem as it interferes with the normal opening and closing of the mouth.
Chiropractic care can help detect joint dysfunction and correlated nerve involvement. It can help relax and reduce muscle spasms in the muscles surrounding the jaw in addition to any joint and muscle involvement from the neck and shoulders.
