We have been seeing a lot more jaw tension in the office. There are many reasons for it, but here are a few that we see commonly:
*Muscle Tension - joint movement and muscle tension work hand-in-hand. If your muscles supporting your TMJ are overworking that may lead to stress at the joint level.
*Joint Movement - the TMJ is interesting since its two joints functioning as one unit. Therefore, both sides work together and not independently of each other.
*Disc - the disc works as a cushion and divides the joint into an upper and lower part. This is allows for fluid to fill in these cavities.
